Europe is always a top destination to visit, but the winter could be extra special. There are far fewer people, which means, you will be able to capture the spirit of the place better. You can meet the locals to understand their culture, and ways of life. There will be shorter queues at the museums too. And of course, the prices of hotels and flights will also be cheaper than the peak summer months.
But there is a lot of variety to choose from in Europe this time of the year. Up north in the polar region, there is some serious snow, but down in the Mediterranean, it will still be milder. There are many charming villages and grand metropolises you can visit. The spirit of Christmas will be everywhere you go.
I have created a list of the top places to visit in Europe during the winter months. I hope you will agree with me. Do let me know what you think.
Abisko in Lapland, Sweden, is far north. In December and January, the sun won’t rise for many weeks, so it is perpetual darkness. It is an amazing place to see the aurora borealis, and experience of a lifetime. There is cross-country skiing too across many trails in the national park. Abisko is for serious winter and snow lovers.
Visit Prague for its castles, nightlife and romantic spirit. Spend time at the underground restaurants, the perfect refuge from the harsh winter outside. There are plenty of pubs to visit. The city will be less crowded and very romantic. The outdoor ice skating rinks and Christmas markets are a must visit as well.
The capital of Germany is a different city in the winter. The theaters and galleries are busy, the city’s pavement seating is full, the cafes and bars and buzzing, and the lakes are frozen. There are many small neighborly and big Christmas markets, all very charming. The temperature can go below zero, so have your cashmere and jackets ready.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Iceland
The Snæfellsnes peninsula in Iceland is the most stunning in winter. The craggy cliffs and misty fjords are a sight to behold. The lava fields are moss-blanketed. The glacier in the towering volcano dates back to the Ice Age. Visit the peninsula on a road trip. Stay at the small Stykkisholmur fishing town.
Salzburg, Austria is a great choice if you love snow covered Baroque architecture, cathedrals, and beautiful castles. There is skiing and Christmas shopping too. Salzburg is a charming city that is best visited when it is cold.
South of France or Italy
If you prefer some sun when it is milder, then head to the South of France or Italy. There are the stunning villages of Sorrento and Positano in the Amalfi coast in Italy. You can visit Sardinia or Sicily as well. In South France, choose from Nice, Monaco, and Cannes. The Mediterranean Coast promises you all the winter sun to get that gorgeous tan.
